The Search for General Tso (2014)

From New York City to the farmlands of the Midwest, there are 50,000 Chinese restaurants in the U.S., yet one dish in particular has conquered the American culinary landscape with a force befitting its military moniker—"General Tso's Chicken." But who was General Tso and how did this dish become so ubiquitous? Ian Cheney's delightfully insightful documentary charts the history of Chinese Americans through the surprising origins of this sticky, sweet, just-spicy-enough dish that we've adopted as our own.

A fun, compelling movie. An interesting portrait of acculturation through food. The film features a well produced, expertly woven narrative. Highly recommended for fans of Chinese-American food, or those interested with the history of Chinese in America.

I think it's really interesting to look at the anthropology of food and how it's changed and morphed into what we're eating today or consider traditional (there's a really great Netflix series called Chef's Table that is related and also really interesting). Search takes such a well-known and renowned dish and really takes a deep look at the many cultures that have rolled into what so many people are familiar with now. It was so crazy to see how history, events, rivalries, politics, and economies played into what has become such a ubiquitous dish - and it's practically the same everywhere too! Such a crazy anthropological journey. Definitely worth your time; trust me, you'll learn more about people than food!

Not only has Cheney made something that tantalizes the tastebuds, but it's good for you too.

Surprisingly lots of fun, it talks about the history of Chinese restaurants here in North America. I wasn't expecting to love this so much but the animation, scenes, interviews, the way they put together the history storyline... It's fantastic. I was so close to missing the movie because I was sick, thank goodness I didn't! Thank you directors for shining spotlight onto this side of history! Well done.
