Ray's portrait of Inuit life in the atomic age, and as with all of his later work, a curious blend of melodrama and pseudo-documentary

This movie is one of the wildest of the 1950s, but it's impossible to stop watching it once it starts. Anthony Quinn's Eskimo wife licking her newborn baby clean is not a sight I'll forget in a hurry.

Nicholas Ray's epic film about Eskimo life and its remoteness from 'civilized' values represents his first -- and, in many ways, most ambitious -- attempt to break free from the Hollywood studios and forge an independent route.

Every freshman at south watches this movie in World Studies (or now Global Connections). It is funny and I guess good.

Anthony Quinn as an eskimo is amazing.A strange movie from one of the greatest american directors and a favourite of Bob Dylan
