Fiore di Levante, Zakynthos, in 1883. A young lady of noble rank, Foteini Santri, lives a carefree life with her younger brother Mimis. The arrival of her first cousin, forty-year-old Angelos Marinis, who has come to the island on vacation, puts an end to her carefree existeness and fills her with troubles and worries. Angelos falls passionately in love with her, but she doesn't respond to his feelings, since they are related. Angelos, disappointed, returns to Athens...

There are epics and then there's Red Cliff. This is perhaps the finest epic film to come out in the last five years. The scope is massive, the battles are exciting, and there's a bunch of other good stuff sprinkled in. But what truly sets this film apart is John Woo. Woo's technical expertise turns Red Cliff into what may be the best action movie this year. The battle scenes contain so many great moments of epic sword fighting that I cannot recall. If you will, imagine Hard Boiled, but with swords. And there you have it. And, like Hard Boiled, this film is a quintessential Woo film. It's got babies being protected whilst killing people, a climactic mexican standoff (but with swords), and doves. One dove is used particularly well, creating a POV shot that is maybe the most epic shot ever conceived by man. In short, this movie is brilliant. A truly impressive feat of filmmaking. Go see it.

Personally, I enjoy history, and the history of China is even more mysterious and compelling! Red Cliff is an epic of its own, with large battles, heroic characters, and impressionable cinematography :) This sensationalist piece about a time of unification by 'warlords' is an interesting piece of China. More interesting is the emphasis on the numerous soldiers slain in Battle over the centuries - absolutely awe-inspiring. None-the-less, great film, in a 2-part saga :)

John Woo's skills of direction are put to the test is this historical epic of near mythical proportions... And although the story is definitely Chinese, bordering on the national romantic, the film is both riveting and entertaining. And for the action-oriented, the ample and extensive battle scenes can leave no one unmoved.
