It’s a sturdy spy thriller from Zhang, a competent first outing in the genre for the filmmaker. But most of all, Cliff Walkers is safe.

A grim thriller but not as straightforward as I expected. Cliff Walkers is a story set in northeast China during 1931 that follows four Chinese spies executing a covert operation. Cliff Walkers is a story set in northeast China during 1931 that follows four Chinese spies executing a covert operation. The plot certainly lent itself to something more uncompromising and much better structured, but unfortunately the development doesn't allow much time to process the events that unfold on screen. Perhaps what I find most conflicting is how at times it tries to be a more serious film than what it initially proposes, and at other times it only seeks to be entertainment, and it's at that point that the film gets more enjoyable. It's worth a look, but I recommend it with reservations.

While there are some riches to be found under the surface for anyone who feels like watching this with a flow chart, Zhang is so clearly seduced by the spell of his own movie magic that everything else feels like an inadvertent side effect. He’s on his side, and he’ll forge whatever strategic alliances he needs to in order to stay there.
