A grim thriller but not as straightforward as I expected. Cliff Walkers is a story set in northeast China during 1931 that follows four Chinese spies executing a covert operation. Cliff Walkers is a story set in northeast China during 1931 that follows four Chinese spies executing a covert operation. The plot certainly lent itself to something more uncompromising and much better structured, but unfortunately the development doesn't allow much time to process the events that unfold on screen. Perhaps what I find most conflicting is how at times it tries to be a more serious film than what it initially proposes, and at other times it only seeks to be entertainment, and it's at that point that the film gets more enjoyable. It's worth a look, but I recommend it with reservations.

There’s nothing in Cliff Walkers that we haven’t seen in many a prior spy tale, and it’s not a picture you’d single out for great acting moments. Clean up the blood, and you could call it almost old-fashioned. It’s still a corker of a thriller that keeps you guessing which Hero of the Revolution will sacrifice him or herself next.

Cliff Walkers quickly drops us into this winter wonderland, all whites, grays, and blacks, and delivers some of the most mesmerizing landscapes you’ll see all year. But for a film about undercover operatives, it lacks thrills, and it doesn’t give us any characters we can latch onto.
