This is quintessential British comedy - up there with Sellers' I'm All Right Jack - and demonstrates just why Tony Hancock is a total legend; he's superb throughout this film, and it's tragic that he didn't stick around and make more films than he did. George Sanders is the big 'star name' in the film, but the rest of the supporting cast (the incomparable Irene Handl plays Mrs Cravat, his landlady; John Le Mesurier plays his boss) is fantastic. Paul Massie took the title role(s) in Hammer's Two Faces Of Dr Jekyll. You need to see this NOW.

It's no Hancock's Half Hour but it's good, and one fo the few films he was in that was any good.

The Rebel is a fabulous mini masterpiece. Hancock has enough room here to infalte his pomposity to 23 Railway Cuttings East Cheam proportions whilst at the same time managing to endear himself to the audience, a difficult balancing act. the art is pretty good too dare I say it and with the mighty George Sanders putting in a memorable cameo it all adds up to a great first time outing for TH on the big screen.

Ok this is one of the funniest films of all time. Not perfect, particulary the second half. But the first half as Hancock transforms from city bowler hat (irene handl is as always brilliant) into a left bank artist of the most original kind is a comedy gem.
