The Rachel Divide never quite cracks Dolezal's facade (if it even is a facade). But Brownson does move beyond the "think-piece" take on a real person — while also questioning whether she should.

Her steadfast refusal to acknowledge the opposing view seems to also be a sore spot with both of her sons, who form a crucial foundation for the story.

In the end, the film raises more questions than it answers: is this a sympathetic portrait or a hatchet job? Is Dolezal a pioneer or mentally unstable? Would she have the same air time if she were a black woman pretending to be white?

There is a tremendously intriguing subject for debate in the middle of this - the possibility of transracial identity, which has already raised a lot of controversy - but the film remains mostly on the surface and never goes deep enough into the complexity of what this could mean.
