The Decent One (2014)

Through previously undiscovered private letters, photos and diaries that were found in the Himmler family house in 1945, the "The Decent One" exposes a unique and at times uncomfortable access to the life and mind of the merciless "Architect of the Final Solution" Heinrich Himmler.

The decision to add in sound effects to zhoosh up the imagery may irk some purists, but Lapa also knows when silence is most effective.

Simon Abrams 29 Sep 2014

Most of the documents that Lapa quotes from are, as presented, unrevealing — even offensive.

An interesting idea, that is either poorly executed or simply un-cinematic in form. It's an engaging idea to try to show different sides of people who have done such horrendous things in their lives. However, Vanessa Lapa's film would have been a much better book than a film. There's nothing visually engaging about this idea, and so it's hard to stay focused to what's going on. So in the end, this is a film that was hard to make it through.

Joe Leydon 12 Oct 2014

A film that doubtless will intrigue a diverse cross-section of academics, historians and history buffs, despite some of Lapa's questionable attempts to enhance the dramatic impact of her narrative.

Wendy Ide 01 Apr 2015

An unsettlingly banal insight into the mind of the architect the Final Solution.
