The movie slowly creeps its way into you obscurely with Anne Bancroft superbly portraying a woman so seemingly uninteresting and boring surrounded by the worldly and indifferent.

At its core, this is a melodramatic soap opera. It is also marvelously penned, beautifully filmed, and magnificently acted.

Very beautiful and touching. This is a very personal Jack Clayton movie and no wonders Anne Bancroft got the golden Palme at the Cannes film festival for her interpretation of unbalanced Jo. Peter Finch is also memorable as the unfaithfull husband.

Anne Bancroft delivers a shocking performance in one of her best, and sadly least known films from the 60s. Clayton and Pinter abetted her with a memorable role, and the result is unforgettable.
