Bette Davis was superb as Elizabeth, and Errol Flynn his charming best as Essex. Also nice, as always to see the young Vincent Price here. An excellent screenplay, and fine direction from Michael Curtiz. Recommended mostly for Bette Davis, though, who was quite attractive here.

No one else has ever had the strength of person to portray Elizabeth but Bette Davis and who better to be her loving adversary than Errol Flynn. MAGIC!

IT WAS VINCENT PRICE! I thought that Sir Raleigh was him for the entire thing, and I kept thinking "Vincent Price is such a good actor, but this is not a movie that he would do..." But as for the (majority of the) movie...I'm actually surprised to hear of off-screen bad blood between Davis and Flynn, because they actually have surprisingly good on-screen chemistry. It was very interesting to watch this movie because the time that it was made almost forced the Queen to submit herself to Essex -- despite what history says. I doubt that Elizabeth would allow herself to be coddled and looked down upon by a subject. However, if you're looking for a more realistic depiction...you're looking for Cate Blanchette...not Bette Davis. Hers was an era of epic romance, and this movie does not disappoint. 1939 was a very good year for movies.
