Not just a landmark in cinema history (specifically the Swedish cinema) is also a transcendental film with highly important special effects for the era, and the remarkable narrative, using flashback within flashback perfectly. Definitely one of the most influential films ever.

The special FX for the time must have been astonishing, but it's merely overlapping images to us now. I feel that the story that the film is based on would be darker somehow. It's Swedish and all, and doom n' gloom lurk all through its entirety, but there is a sense of hope the pervades and, unfortunately, doesn't work for me.

The one thing that surprised me most about this film is that it's not really much of a horror film like I previously thought. It has creepy imagery and supernatural elements, sure, but it's more of a drama than anything else. I can see how Ingmar Bergman was heavily influenced by it. It's a stunningly made meditation on mortality and life and death disguised as a horror film. The ghost effects, though, looks great and is quite spooky.

Based on Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness! by Selma Lagerlof, The Phantom Carriage is one of the masterworks of Swedish Cinema. Directed by actor and director Victor Sjostrom, the film inspired Ingar Bergman to make movies, if that tells you anything. The groundbreaking special effects, the Charles Dickens type story and the performances are absolutely amazing. It also influenced people like Stanley Kubrick, most notably in The Shining. I actually hadn't heard of this before but I bought the Criterion Blu-ray release and fell in love with it. For those who have the patience for silent films, this is an amazing film.

When a man is slain at midnight on new year's eve, he is doomed to drive Death's carriage for the next year. As he is made aware of his sins, past & present, he repents for a chance to right his ways in this Dickensian phantasmagoria silent Swedish film.
