A strong, visual entry from Sjostrom. The way that light regularly breaks in from the top of the frame, while darkness creeps in from the sides gives the film a rich atmosphere consistent with the main character's struggle for his soul. The film does feel a bit repetitive by the end as it traces the depths to which Bill sinks, but the special effects and compelling narrative with the strong visual style make this a solid, entertaining film.

You'll think of "A Christmas Carol" and "It's a Wonderful Life" and maybe "Reefer Madness" but it's all good and classy.

When a man is slain at midnight on new year's eve, he is doomed to drive Death's carriage for the next year. As he is made aware of his sins, past & present, he repents for a chance to right his ways in this Dickensian phantasmagoria silent Swedish film.

A legend tells that the last person to die in a year will drive the carriage of Death and collect souls for one year to come -- a year where every day feels like a hundred years on earth for the driver. Terrific film based on Selma LagerlÃ¶f's novel by the same name, this is one of the best silent movies I have ever seen.
