The Moderns (1988)

Nick Hart is a struggling American artist who lives amongst the expatriate community in 1920s Paris. He spends most of his time drinking and socializing in local café's and pestering gallery owner Libby Valentin to sell his paintings. He becomes involved in a plot by wealthy art patroness Nathalie de Ville to forge three paintings. This leads to several run-ins with American rubber magnate Bertram Stone, who happens to be married to Hart's ex-wife Rachel.

The plot of the film ostensibly concerns love, heartbreak, money problems, the meaning of art, alcoholism and finding one's identity. But in the film, everything is ersatz, even the surrealism.

It takes place at that enchanted moment in Paris when the Lost Generation created itself and then proceeded to create, promote, fabricate and publicize modern literature, art, music and attitudes.

Fantastic conjecture about those who may have served as templates for characters in The Sun Also Rises- lovestruck forger, condom magnate, obituary hack, assorted hangers-on, Gertrude Stein and Hemingway himself. The film easily transcends its Lost Generation trappings and has much to say about love, art and authenticity in general. Isham's soundtrack one of his best. Parlez-moi d'Amour...
