The Mechanic (1972)

Arthur Bishop is a veteran hit man who, owing to his penchant for making his targets' deaths seem like accidents, thinks himself an artist. It's made him very rich, but as he hits middle age, he's so depressed and lonely that he takes on one of his victim's sons, Steve McKenna, as his apprentice. Arthur puts him through a rigorous training period and brings him on several hits. As Steven improves, Arthur worries that he'll discover who killed his father.

Bronson's best film as a "leading man"... Very well acted, scripted and paced. Jan Michael Vincent did a decent job in the film and the ending was perfect in that it really couldn't have ended any other way... Michael Winner directed a pretty good job here... probably his best directorial work.

John Wayne and Charles Bronson are two "Hollywood household heroes" (say that 3 times as fast as you can) that has yet to be explored in my DVDography. My cherry has now been popped with Bronson. So, he is definitely an old school version of the Steven Seagal we know now. An awkward actor that reads lines terribly, sometimes not even speaking clearly and eyes of a zombie. Having said that, I love Seagal and now Bronson! I don't want good acting when I sign up for an action packed thriller. So "The Mechanic" from 1972 was awesome and maybe because of Bronson's dead eyes. A killer, hired or not, shouldn't look like Ashton Kutcher or Tom Cruise. We need someone like Mr. Bronson. The movie is dark, at times really dark, and an excellent excuse to root for the bad guy. One of the best action films from the best decade ever, the 70's, and I recommend for pure escapist entertainment. I loved this one as much as "The Day of the Jackal" and there will be much more explorations into Charles Bronson's career!
