What the hell do you can this film other than quite original and profoundly disturbing.

The reviews of this film are quite poor, but I thought it was a really great film. People have complained that the murders are typical slasher movie style and are disrespectful to the dead and their families. I disagree because the Manson murders are so glossily done over in our media culture that we forget that these murders were horrible. This movie makes you see how horrible they were. I also really like the fact that the family members were the focus instead of Charlie Manson because they were the ones that did the killing. This movie took Jim VanBebber 15 years to complete.

A exploitation take on the Manson murders that stays true to the story. The cross-cutting with a story about modern-day Mansonites leaves a little to be desired, but this is still a great little horror film with some truly chilling moments.

Possibly the best biopic of mass murder since 1986's "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer." That it injects fresh curiosity into a case that has become an anomaly in our historical/legal/popular culture is also saying something. While the spastic narrative is loosely-stitched together, the film is more about capturing the bad-acid trip surreality of the late 1960s. Like a cross between "Easy Rider" and "Natural Born Killers," this is one hellacious ride that invokes the '70s 'grindhouse' more effectively than any of the torture-porn poseurs currently dabbling in the genre.
