File this gem in the "careful what you wish for" category. Angels decide to find out just what mere mortals are made of by bestowing one insignificant, earthbound chap with the power to work miracles. Simple, straightforward H.G. Wells tale is well cast and features some still impressive special effects. The man of the title, Fotheringay, is a bit of a schlep - not able to get the girl of his dreams and toiling away in obscurity for the local department store. So, it only makes sense that, once he's given the power to do whatever he wants, he mostly dithers and is at the mercy of powerful business interests and pie-in-the-sky dreamers, who all have an idea of what he should do with his new found abilities. At once a story about the economic elite versus the common man and also a tale that touches on our deepest fears of what we are really capable of if given the opportunity, TMWCWM is fast paced, funny with a suitably crazy climax.

A virtual who's who of early British cinema including Roland Young, George Sanders, Torin Thatcher & Ernst Thesinger. The plot is still very valid today even if the way of life is dated. The print I watched was very crackly, this movie needs the Critereon treatment. Dated but amusing

this Movie came long before "Bruce Allmighty" - based on a Story of H. G. Wells - that surpasses the 100-Minutes-Commercial for the Grimace-Maker in each Point and, above all, manages without obligatory Christian Proselytization.

81/100. Wonderfully imaginative film, there aren't too many like this one. Roland Young is wonderful in the lead, the special effects are really quite amazing, especially considering the year in which it was made.

Love it! A simple idea spirals into a complex web of cause and effect. Much better than most movies of the same genre in the last 20 years.
