Even if its audience will be about 0.01 percent of that of Coraline and Up, Nina Paley's hilarious, effortlessly cross-cultural and utterly original animated feature should be considered with the same lofty regard.

So how do you sooth the sting of rejection after your husband dumps you by e-mail and leaves you homeless? Why, by making a movie, of course! I adored this, and it was all the more amazing by it being made mostly by one person. It had great design and a great sense of humor. It seems like it was the best form of catharsis for Nina, as well.

That Nina Paley single-handedly produced, directed, and animated this feature over five years on a home computer is a remarkable feat in and of itself. Her real accomplishment, though, is providing a fresh, funny, and accessible version of the Hindu epic Ramayana (or "Sitayana" as the case may be) through a Western feminist lens. Her use of Annette Hanshaw songs as the voice of Sita is brilliantly apropos.
