Wonderful, quaint, entertaining and tongue-in-cheek telling of one of the great epics of Indian mythology. The hypnotic voice of Anette Hanshaw is beautiful and the songs fits perfectly into the scenes. Kudos to Nina Paley for pulling off this little gem.

Pretty neat. It was a weird mix of autobiographical sketches, reinterpretations of The Ramayana as 1920s jazz numbers in a South Park/Betty Boop/Cartoon Network style, and pop-Indian Indonesian shadow puppets (for whatever reason). While I sort of lost interest with the kinda stilted Flash animation, it's pretty impressive that it was all animated by one woman.

I've never been prouder to live in Champaign. This film from Champaign-Urbana resident Nina Paley proves that a more traditional sort of 2D animation can be every bit as mind-blowingly beautiful as anything Pixar produces. The style is absolutely mesmerizing and quite unlike anything I've ever seen. Also, the music by Annette Hanshaw was wonderfully utilized giving the musical a delightful twist.

Yeah, this was way better than the other Ramayana based toon I'd seen, "Hanuman." This one done from mainly Sita's point of view and filtered through the B story autobiography of director, Nina Paley. The animation was cool and the music really good. I like the bits where the Indian folks are discussing the story and really asking questions that the audience might be thinking while learning about the Ramayana. It's clever and funny and educational and a little tearjerky. You guys should see it.

I loved this. The animation was visually stunning. The decision to use 1920s jazz vocals to help narrate an ancient tale, seems like an odd and risky idea at first thought, but it worked beautifully. The parallel versions of the story were equally engaging and well done, each utilizing a different style of animation. This movie is definitely worth checking out.
