An awesome and powerful movie on alcoholism, that still feels relevant in the way it shows both the man's struggle with the bottle and his girlfriend's and brother's pain. Marvelous acting by Ray Milland throughout the movie. The Hollywood happy ending didn't really fit in, though.

An alcoholic's terrifying weekend alone with a bottle. Ray Milland won an Oscar for this and deserved it.

A classic, in my top 20 of all time. A great movie about addiction. Ray Milland gives a top notch performance. Another great Billy Wilder film.

The Lost Weekend is an intense drama that tackles alcoholism head on with a bold performance from Ray Milland. The majority of the film takes place in a single weekend: the weekend that writer Don Birnam drinks, dies, and is reborn. The film was groundbreaking in 1945, and still packs quite a punch for modern audiences. There are so many aspects of the film that work perfectly: the entire cast is excellent, the screenplay is remarkable, Billy Wilder's direction works brilliantly, the music is both bizarre and creepy as it perfectly creates the pathos needed to relate the character of Don. The film works the audience in a state of sympathy; here is a man who is destroying his life, and you don't pit him, because of the way the film has made you care. A truly exceptional film.
