The fact that for a revenge flick it's a little on the talky side will leave some disappointed. However, it's a well made British noir with a strong John Mills performance in the lead role.

Is really slow to start with and takes a while to get into. But John Mills is quite good in it and the film has a good dialogue especially for Mills. There are also a few twists to the film which are quite good and the ending is worked really quite well!!!

A nicely low-life British noir with an unpredictable plot and a satisfyingly untidy ending.

Neil O 06 Jun 2009

Acclaimed British film noir filmed on the North Kent Marshes on the Thames Estuary and the dingy backstreets of Gravesend and starring John Mills as a wrongly convicted man who gets out of jail after 12 years determined to avenge himself on all those whose perjury framed him for murder. The acting style is mostly taciturn underplaying, though Chandos is refreshingly sweaty in his role as the closeted crime boss and Mills is rock-solid throughout.
