Ellis French is a young, gay Black man, rejected by his mother and with few options for his future, decides to join the Marines, doing whatever it takes to succeed in a system that would cast him aside. But even as he battles deep-seated prejudice and the grueling routines of basic training, he finds unexpected camaraderie, strength, and support in this new community, giving him a hard-earned sense of belonging that will shape his identity and forever change his life.

This is a human story, as messy and complex and maddening as any ever told, and while Bratton makes it his own (how could he not?), the generosity with which he shares it with us make it special indeed.

The Inspection has a few poignant moments, but its lack of introspection, well-developed character dynamics, and exploration of the systems in place keep the film from reaching its full potential.

In this drama about homophobia within the U.S. Army, Jeremy Pope shines as a black gay man facing contempt from the institution and his mother, who disowns him because of who he is. His acting is raw; you can feel frustration and loneliness in his stare. Animal Collective's score is also a highlight; it defies genre conventions with some unusual yet compelling tunes. The problem with 'The Inspection' is its last act, which gives the impression that enduring abuse will have the reward of acceptance in the end. Also, there's a slight military propaganda feeling in it; it may be involuntary, but the position in which we find the protagonist before the credits roll sure contributes to this thought.

Union's sour presence suggests the tougher film that could have been, bookending the movie with a double dose of viciousness; theirs is a relationship that won't be solved by a crisp uniform. If this is Bratton's calling card — and it should be — her scenes are the ones that suggest the real promise to come.
