The Inspection (2022)

Ellis French is a young, gay Black man, rejected by his mother and with few options for his future, decides to join the Marines, doing whatever it takes to succeed in a system that would cast him aside. But even as he battles deep-seated prejudice and the grueling routines of basic training, he finds unexpected camaraderie, strength, and support in this new community, giving him a hard-earned sense of belonging that will shape his identity and forever change his life.

The Inspection is a powerful yet unsettlingly inconclusive account of an important, haunting period in a man’s past.

Bratton has made a film that isn’t necessarily anti-military — he is no doubt proud of his service — but pro-humanity. In a sense, Ellis is going through his own personal boot camp. Perhaps the film should have been called “The Introspection.”

In this drama about homophobia within the U.S. Army, Jeremy Pope shines as a black gay man facing contempt from the institution and his mother, who disowns him because of who he is. His acting is raw; you can feel frustration and loneliness in his stare. Animal Collective's score is also a highlight; it defies genre conventions with some unusual yet compelling tunes. The problem with 'The Inspection' is its last act, which gives the impression that enduring abuse will have the reward of acceptance in the end. Also, there's a slight military propaganda feeling in it; it may be involuntary, but the position in which we find the protagonist before the credits roll sure contributes to this thought.
