With every line and look, Loren both reminds us of her legacy playing tenacious women and paints Rosa’s distinctive fire and grief like an artisan. It’s a compact master class in the movie star’s craft: exquisitely tailored glamour and deft characterization working seamlessly in tandem.

What a movie! Sophia Loren comes out of retirement to deliver an amazing & powerful performance. Gueye manages to connect with the cruel world where we live: immigrants, trans, prostitutes, abandoned children. From the performances, photography, music ( Laura Pausini better gets an Oscar)... the movie is entirely worth to watch it. Suggestion... watch it in Italian with subtitles in your language... you will miss lots with the translation...

The movie itself would be quite conventional but for the beautifully nuanced performance of Sophia Loren. For me she surpasses the only other memorable turn she gave in 'Two Women' back in the sixties. The film itself is packaged nicely in music and production departments. The song Lo Si (Seen) just slays you. If the film doesn't win another single Oscar, the song must. Go Diane Warren.

The Life Ahead might be a familiar story, but as a showcase for Loren’s sensuality, star power and unfailing instincts, it feels both classic and exhilaratingly new. She’s still got it, and as this performance reminds us at every turn, she always did.

She is a great talent, a legend, someone who has made enduring classics, and just the fact that she’s still working at 86 is a gift. But somehow none of that makes The Life Ahead, coming to Netflix on Friday, Nov. 13, an experience worth having.
