From the very beginning of this movie on you won't take a bite of your popcorn. One of my favorite all time films for its obsession and passion, for its cold bloodedness and for its mystique. And also for its incredibly beautiful cinematography. I don't mean flowers and colors, because it's black and white, I mean for its secrecy, its hipocracy, the sheer beauty and mystique veiling what's truly ugly, sinister and utterly narcissitic. I can't say I'd like Bette Davis as a person, but as an actress I can't take my eyes off her. In her large repetoire of films this is one of her best. The story line unfolds with excruciating perfection, the tragedy of her actions is so unnecessary, the consequences of her obsession intractable, dooming. Exotic, haunting, mesmerizing, and even painful, it's an amazing experience.

Intense, surprising, with good acting and a strong ending... it was a good way to know Bette

It's a real shame that the version of The Maltese Falcon that Betty Davis appeared in wasn't that good, because her performance in "The Letter" shows that she would have been the perfect Bridgid O'shaunessy. Her character in The Letter has all of the manipulative dishonesty of the former character, but she has one redeeming quality: her actions are driven by uncontrollable passion, as opposed to petty evil. William Wyler's direction is superb, as is the shooting of cinematographer Toney Gaudio and the score by Max Steiner.

I always enjoy any movie with Bette Davis' name attached to it and I enjoyed this one as well. I would not consider this to be her best film, her acting was superb as always but the plot to me just didn't seem to grab me. It was a bittersweet to watch the ending, but she had it coming to her, but it was still sad to see, and the last shot was very dramatic and contrasting.

Essential Bette Davis! This is a role she can really sink her teeth into and does! Bette kills her lover in a jealous rage but not before the body is discovered and she must come up with an excuse for what happened. She manages to create sympathy for being attacked and fools everyone, including her husband. She would get away with it if it wasn't for one piece of evidence...the letter! Everyone points out that the opening scene is very iconic but take a look at the moment when she is caught and can't turn back...It's all Bette Davis eyes! I'm not one for big scenes, but some movies just have them and this one has two! If Oscars were truly given for performances, her third would be for this and her first for "Of Human Bondage" (no argument on "Jezebel") .
