William Wyler directs with flourish in this engaging story of jilted adulteress (Bette Davis) who kills her lover and tries to get away with it after revealing letter turns up that could threaten to expose her. James Stephenson is strong as Davis' dedicated defense attorney who takes her side while her complacent husband struggles to understand. Bette gives suitably multi-layered performance which makes it difficult for us to decide whether or not we can or should side with her. Gale Sondergaard is memorable in her mesmerizing role as the Asian wife of the slain victim who has control of the infamous Letter.

The opening scene is fantastic, and so is the expressive Bette Davis. It's like a film noir...outside of the noir era. Very interesting sound stage piece.

The Letter (1940) is a classic melodramatic film noir of murder and deceit, directed by William Wyler. The screenplay by Howard Koch

She's actually very understated throughout this except for the last scene she does with Herbert Marshall.

Essential Bette Davis! This is a role she can really sink her teeth into and does! Bette kills her lover in a jealous rage but not before the body is discovered and she must come up with an excuse for what happened. She manages to create sympathy for being attacked and fools everyone, including her husband. She would get away with it if it wasn't for one piece of evidence...the letter! Everyone points out that the opening scene is very iconic but take a look at the moment when she is caught and can't turn back...It's all Bette Davis eyes! I'm not one for big scenes, but some movies just have them and this one has two! If Oscars were truly given for performances, her third would be for this and her first for "Of Human Bondage" (no argument on "Jezebel") .
