Nice bit of Film Noir with Carney as an aging PI getting mixed up with the nutty Lily Tomlin to find who killed his former partner. Plot may sound familiar, but it's all in how it is pulled off, plus the chemistry of the stars. Much more violent than expected, but that just adds to the gritty realism. Highly recommended for fans of the genre and for fans of the two stars.

I love this movie, it makes me smile, it's fun, sad, funny, Art Carney is great as the old dick. It's the kind of movie that'd never be made today, no CGI.

The honeymooners and this movie prove that Carney is one of the best American actors of all time. Shame he did not get many great roles such as this one. If you are a fan of detective fiction, smart scripts and film making, watch this flick. Rx!

Writer/director Robert Benton is someone who absolutely has my number and I'm a huge fan of everything he does, from "There Was a Crooked Man" and "Bonnie and Clyde" to "Nobody's Fool" and "Twilight" (the Paul Newman film, not the lovesick vampire movie), I love all of his films. In this one, Benton presents a charming revisionist detective film with broken down detective Art Carney being hired by kooky Lily Tomlin to find her cat. Like most old detetive stories, a simple missing person (or cat) case turns into something much more complicated. Carney and Tomlin are a terrifically mismatched pair. The supporting players are amazing. But most of all, Benton's dialogue and script are a spot on love letter to classic Hollywood detective pictures while at the same time subverting the genre tropes. This one is a must see for fans of classic Hollywood noir and/or 70s revisionist films.

I'm writing this piece at the same time I'm writing "Fargo" because in a very interesting way of how the nuiances and the interactions with the characters are primary and are more important than the twisting and curving plot, that personally I gave up trying to follow. It wasn't due to the twists being confusing, actually they all make sense in an odd way much like cetain jigsaw puzzle pieces that doesn't appear to fit, just seems to fit at the right time, Lily Tomlin's brilliant performance is a wonderful microcosm in this idea. Because much like life things that you don't expect to happen, happen and why they do you make the most of it and in some cases you run with it. The camera angles and colors are wonderful creating a 1970's film noir that is both familiar and dreamy and new at the same time.
