The Last Sentence (2012)

Renowned journalist Torgny Segerstedt declares war against Hitler as he criticizes Swedish politicians who tried to look away from the tyranny of the Nazis with the good excuse of "neutralism". His only weapon is his pen and his life is full of gossip such as an affair with his boss' wife, a love scandal with a secretary younger than his daughter, and the suicide of his wife. However, he continues to fight a one man battle against Hitler and the Nazi regime until his death, throwing the question "Can one person really change history?" to the audience.

Very unusual film based on true character that was demeaning to Hitler during the war. Sweden trying to avoid fighting was bugged by the man and his articles. Luckily, Hitler decided to attack Russia instead of taking the whole europe and England. The film is interesting but it is not so much about an anti-Hitler as much as about the man himself, which was far from perfect. Still another take and point of view of the war.

The important thing to remember is that this film is a fictional characterization based on events and conditions surrounding the real Torgny Segerstedt and is not meant to be biographical in the literal sense. The symbolism of autumn leaves in a stream and the paternalistic adoration of dogs over human relationships are excellent touches that enhance the ageing protagonist's narcissistic character. By the end of the film you are left questioning whether Torgny was a good man or a self-indulgent bastard; and that is as it should be when realistically portraying the flawed character of the public hero as a saint with clay feet. The black and white cinematic treatment helps us concentrate on the psychological elements of each character and is in line with our mental bias that events of that period are recollected in muted greys. Though not great film it was overall an excellent artistic effort on the part of the director and the cast.

Measured and beautifully modulated, the 82-year-old director has the kind of sureness and fluidity that is easy to underestimate. But it's difficult not to be impressed by the results.
