Tries too hard to shock us by delivering pointless scenes of blood, death and rape.

Charlton Heston plays a retired lawman named Sam Burgade who goes after an escaped bunch of convicts led by a half breed outlaw Zach Provo (James Coburn). The hunt becomes even more personal when Heston's daughter (Barbara Hershey) is kidnapped by Provo who wants to torture Charlton Heston for killing his wife eleven years previous when he was a sheriff. Overall it's an entertaining western flick with some gory and violent scenes including sexual degradation.

Andrew V. McLaglens' hard hitting and nasty 1976 western "The Last Hard Men" sees the mighty James Coburn and the late great Charlton Heston go toe-to-toe in a dusty and blood soaked showdown in the Sonoran Desert. James Coburn plays Zach Provo an escaped convict hell-bent on getting revenge on Sam Burgade a now retierd peace officer who was responsible for sending Zach to jail and killing his woman. Provo and his gang, members of the same ragged chaingang he escaped from, kidnaps Burgade's daughter and heads for the Mexican border. The carnage that follows echoes both Peckinpah and Leone.

Brutally realistic western, has Heston hunting down kidnappers of his Daughter. While most Westerns glamorize the era, this one does no such thing, it's not subtle, & not for the squeamish.
