The Landlord (1970)

At the age of twenty-nine, Elgar Enders "runs away" from home. This running away consists of buying a building in a black ghetto in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn. Initially, his intention is to evict the black tenants and convert the building into a posh flat. But Elgar is not one to be bound by yesterday's urges, and soon he has other thoughts on his mind.

Not sure why they call it a comedy. Lots of great actors and great acting. Good reflection of people and their views for that period it was made.

Starts off with promise before devolving into a 70s-core miasma of "messages", many of which contradict one another, and not in the way such things tend to IRL. In the way they tend to in a movie that's supposed to be about "race relations" but is really about a noxious white guy using black people in order to get out from under the thumb of his castrating mother and become a man. Great performances by most of the cast, though.

Beau Bridges and Diana Sands, Oscar snubbed.

I hadn't heard of this until I saw an ad for it on TCM. It's a broad satire of gentrification, with very Hal Ashby-an cuts and it's so dated, but it was very, very entertaining.
