The L-Shaped Room (1962)

Jane is young, French, pregnant and unmarried. Bucking convention, she is uninterested in settling with her baby's father or getting an abortion. After renting a room in a dingy London boarding house, Jane befriends the odd group of inhabitants and starts an affair with one boarder, Toby. As Jane's pregnancy threatens her new relationship, and the reality of single motherhood approaches, she is forced to decide what to do about both her baby and her budding romance.

This films great. filmed at the dawn of the sixties sexual revolution, it musta been pretty controversial in its day...covering homosexuality, abortion and and a good bit of pre- marital shinnanigins. Portrays contemporary attitudes very well to unmarried mothers and the hush hush style of lesbianism. Tragic really, how women were often forced into terminations as they were deemed unfit to survive without male support. Gritty at times, addressing impoverished living , but not without fun times in smoky jazz clubs and days out in the park..where incidentally one should not lie down on the grass with a member of the opposite sex, for fear of getting a severe wrist slapping.

Leslie Caron at her very best! It was really refreshing to see her do something less fluffy and more dramatic. Love how real it was with thoughts of abortion, sex, etc at the start of the 60s. Seems slow during some parts but you are really engaged nontheless.
