The Kitchen (2019)

The mobster husbands of three 1978 Hell's Kitchen housewives are sent to prison by the FBI. Left with little but a sharp ax to grind, the ladies take the Irish mafia's matters into their own hands — proving unexpectedly adept at everything from running the rackets to taking out the competition… literally.

It’s a mess of a movie, choppy and incoherent, a mishmash of tone that veers wildly from comedy to bloody drama, a gangster epic with no grounding in any people, place, or thing.

Women have been long overdue their “Goodfellas” or “Scarface,” but the not-too-hot The Kitchen is more superficial comic-book posturing than enjoyable blast of exploitation equality.

This movie was a hot mess. Horribly written and the only notable character performance was by Moss. It seemed like Haddish was just thrown into the mix. McCarthy tried way too hard to be a tough girl. Wouldn’t recommend.

Actually, it is surprisingly a good movie with fine storytelling, good acts from the lead actresses, decent feeling. Not groundbreaking, but it doesn't aim to and doesn't have to be. I had fun.

Michael Phillips 07 Aug 2019

This material, though, is damn thin. Like so many films derived from the pictures and words of a graphic novel, The Kitchen feels perfunctory and sterile and under-detailed.
