Margit and her older sister Katla flee for safety after their mother is burned to death for witchcraft. Finding shelter with Johan and his resentful young son, Jonas, the sisters help form an impromptu family unit that's soon strained by Katla's burgeoning sorcery.

The Juniper Tree’s peculiar pedigree as an American indie fueled by European arthouse tropes and constructed with a flair for the avant-garde and the handmade marks it as a welcome rediscovery.

Slow paced, black and white Icelandic movie, loosely based on the Grimm's fairy tale of The Juniper Tree, in which the evil stepmother kills the young son of her husband, puts him in her soup and lets the father eat from it. The sister finds bones in the soup and buries them under the juniper tree. Eventually the boy returns as a bird (but the last part of the tale, in which the boy has his revenge, is missing in the movie). The main attraction in this film is the younger of the two sisters, played by BjÃ¶rk.

In watching a newly restored version, I was struck not only by Björk’s distinctive charisma at 24 years old but also by the talent of the film’s writer, director and editor, Nietzchka Keene.

I love Bjork. I didn't get this movie. I don't remember enough about it. I think it was one of those lost in translation foreign films.

Björk brings an otherworldly calm to her visionary role, and occasionally sings.
