A Classic movie by director John Ford. Definitly a superior film by all standards. A must see for fans of history and early talkie.

The film's gorgeous black-and-white cinematography -- with its streams of fog and sparkling cobblestones -- gave audiences a new glimpse as to the potential artistry of cinema.

Intensely atmospheric, taut as a tightrope, thoughtful, lyrical, funny, gripping, brutal and finally heartbreaking. John Ford excises decades of pent-up Catholic guilt on the silver screen and the results are nothing short of cinematic perfection.

Awesome acting. Trite dialogue and imagery is saved by subtle plot detours. I'm a big Departed fan and I can see where Scorsese got some inspiration.

Victor MeLaglen has never given an abler performance, and the film, even if it sometimes underlines its points rather crudely, is a memorable picture of a pitiless war waged without honour on either side in doorways and cellars and gin shops.
