[Sklyan] Brooks's performance as Mister... the best child performance of 2013.

Gritty, heartbreaking and heartwarming story of two children who fend for themselves and each other in NYC. After their mothers are arrested, "Mister" and Pete run away from child protective services and spend the summer trying to feed themselves and stay safe. Of course, I cried.

There is a bold joy in the film, which can be credited to Mister and Pete, played wonderfully by Skylan Brooks and Ethan Dizon. Their childlike innocence but adult sensitivities gave the flick an undeniable heart.

Skylan Brooks should have picked up some noms for his role of Mister. Amazing performance from a very young actor. The same can be said for Ethan Dizon. The chemistry between the two of them was more than evident. Not sure why this film was overlooked....would highly recommend it it.

Stylistically, this saga of survival never aims for urban neo-realism. Yet, as sentimental humanism, it shows laudable taste in dodging the usual indulgent touches and turns when lost kids find their way.
