Marion Cotillard oferece uma de minhas atuações femininas favoritas dos últimos anos (as outras são de Rachel Weisz (The Deep Blue Sea) e Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)). É um filme forte que aborda as dificuldades de imigrantes recém-chegadas à América, focando na subjugação da mulher e sua transformação em propriedade. Destaque para a direção primorosa de James Gray, a cinematografia de Darius Khondji e a direção de arte de Pete Zumba - além da presença hipnotizante de Joaquin Phoenix, em um dos personagens mais ambíguos e tridimensionais de sua carreira.

James Gray's "The Immigrant" is a superb and outstanding American film that echoes the work of Francis Ford Coppola, Elia Kazan, and Roberto Rossellini. A film that beautifully expresses the struggles and hardship our ancestors endured. A seamlessly unified diverse and woozy film that gets closer to any other film on the immigrant lifestyle of the early 20th century. It's a compelling, intelligent, and sweeping film, The Immigrant is a true work of art that teaches even as it entertains.

The film, too, changes shape as it goes along, beginning as something resembling social realism before developing into an old-fashioned "woman's picture."

Social realism at its best and a well-executed story with few plot holes. The second half was more dynamic than the first. The scenes on Ellis Island were personally meaningful to me. Dealing in specifics that concern the larger theme of a fall from grace and the struggle for redemption.
