Loved the book..and the movie had some really poignant parts...but the overacting by the lead was distracting.

This is a beautifully made, involving film, but it would have been so much stronger with a bit of careful editing.

I like Ethan Hawke, think he's often overlooked for his work. With The Hottest State he steps behind the camera to direct from his own novel (although he take a small role too) and delivers a serious piece of navel-gazing. The drama focuses on the William (Webber - reminiscent of a junior Sam Rockwell) who thinks he's found the love of his life in the shape of Sara (Moreno). He's intense, she's aloof and not ready to settle down... it's all about the emotions of that first 'serious' relationship, and William also has to face up to some issues with his estranged Dad (Hawke). A little flabby in places, but features a great performance from Moreno and Hawke does a reasonable job for his directorial debut.

Good drama, but nothing special. Laura Linney and Ethan Hawke are great in their 10 minute roles, though! Would liked to have had more insight into the kid's parents' lives and why things were the way they were.
