Free State of Jones (2016)

In 1863, Mississippi farmer Newt Knight serves as a medic for the Confederate Army. Opposed to slavery, Knight would rather help the wounded than fight the Union. After his nephew dies in battle, Newt returns home to Jones County to safeguard his family but is soon branded an outlaw deserter. Forced to flee, he finds refuge with a group of runaway slaves hiding out in the swamps. Forging an alliance with the slaves and other farmers, Knight leads a rebellion that would forever change history.

I saw this film last night and to say I was never moved so deeply by a film is an absolute understatement. Everything about it is superb. If it doesn't get an Oscar or two would be a major travesty. Or maybe it would just be another telling sign of our continuing human decline. I am particularly disturbed by the negative reviews so many of the so-called critical reviewers have given the film. Could it be that their judgements are negatively influenced by their own fear of seeing truth? Or maybe it's something deeper, that the film uncovers the ignorance and hatred that lies within the hearts of those who refuse to see the truth because it diminishes their own sense of self importance. Or perhaps it's simply a reflection of the dumbing down of our species. The Free State Of Jones forces us to look at the truth that our history teachings have failed to clearly show us: that war is always about the money.

A sensational performance by a phenomenal cast. The embodiment of a struggle still fought today within human rights and uniting for an appropriate cause. This film captures the aspect of life during the reconstruction ERA never seen before. Capped off by Oscar Award winning performances by a perfect cast. This is a must see film.

The bad ratings are so off the mark. If you are somewhat intelligent, have an interest in history then you will love this movie. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Best movie out there right now.
