The Homecoming: A Christmas Story (1971)

It's Christmas Eve, early 1930s on Walton's Mountain. As the family prepares for the holiday, they anxiously await Pa's return home from his job in the city some 50 miles away. He is late, and Ma and the grandparents hear on the radio a report of a bus accident that worries them. Oldest son John-Boy must step up to help grandfather cut down a Christmas tree, and upon learning the concern about Daddy sets out to find him.

Such a sweet story, but you can tell they haven't worked all the bugs out for the TV show.

This was the basis for The Waltons TV series, and is just as overly sentimental as the series. It means well and does evoke a good spirit and has a flawed but nice feel for the time. The performances by the adult cast members is good, the younger ones not so good. Well meaning story.

A really underrated and overlooked Christmas movie. It'll probably get retro and be "found" some day. Or, as is today's fashion - a remake (but this original is great). Especially as it is about the Depression, and the tale of simple gift giving and poverty is there for all to see. The Black church scene is especially well acted (and pretty modern for its time it, included African-Americans), the broken charity doll and the Baldwin sisters' Christmas tree are timeless scenes. The bird's nest being used as an ornament on the kids' Xmas tree is so anti-Hallmark. Some of John-boy's hallucinations are over the top, but you get the vibe that Patricia Neal (the actress)may have been drinking alot between filming. Thomas White
