a delightful mix of drama and comedy.& the first of 2 Stanwyck Christmis movies the other is 'christmas in Connecticut"

The loose, graceful script is by Preston Sturges (one of his last before he turned to directing), and it partakes of a softness and nostalgia that seldom surfaced in his own films. Mitchell Leisen, the director, serves the material very well with his slightly distanced, glowing style.

It's a movie written and directed by Preston Sturges starring Barbara Stanwick as a thief who falls in love with a good guy, and it's not the Lady Eve.

Barbara Stanwyck is beautiful as she ever was, but this movie shows me, again, how underrated Fred MacMurray is! He was simply wonderful. The reditions of "My Indiana Home" brought tears to my eyes.

A beautiful film. One of my favorite Christmas movies. This is one of Stanwyck's very best performances. It's interesting to see she and Fred MacMurray paired together outside of film noir. It's a heartfelt, moving, genuine love story that is pretty much perfect in every way. It's written by Preston Sturges (though not directed by him. Mitchell Leisen helmed this one), and it's proof that he could write more than comedy. This movie is funny at points, but it's more of a drama. While Sturges wrote so many hilarious screenplays, I think his real strength was his ability to present a character that seems cliche, and then to dig deep beneath the surface and show how human that character is.
