It's hard to criticise a film where the characters' actions changed rapidly and confused me, and the mother's character remains confusing and unsympathetic, when it's based on the real life memories of someone who was a child at the time. In all other respects, it's impeccably made, with fine direction, performances, and atmosphere. But I still found it hard to like and understand the mother, and I'm not sure whether it's a fair to call it a flaw. Then again, the son seems to rapidly change from a sympathising character to an annoyed little sod pretty quickly, so I don't know.

Joan Chen is marvelous! A pathetic story about how a Chinese family struggle to live. Agree that Joan's character is irresponsible, self-centered mother, classic "playing victim" kind of woman. Her suicide is sad but acts as a real relief to the whole family - or it's just highlighted to justify Tom's condemnation to his mom results in her suicide. Tom's fascination presented by old fashion Chinese classic movie is funny. And agree that Uncle Bill is really a good man!

Pretty good. What is it like to live with such a crazy mother? What sort of manipulation is most effective in real life? "the threat is stronger than the execution"

This emotion-filled biographical drama was based on the childhood days of writer/director Tony Ayres. International actress Joan Chen stars as Rose, a woman who doesn't want to lose her youth and beauty and can't seem to settle down. Strangely although her behaviour affects her daughter openly it doesn't seem to outwardly worry the younger son Tom. But the instability of their lives slowly builds into hatred inside of young Tom which he doesn't openly display but eventually puts into writing. Scooped the 2007 AFI Awards winning 8 categories including Best Actress, Direction and Screenplay.
