The Green Slime (1968)

A giant asteroid is heading toward Earth so some astronauts disembark from a nearby space station to blow it up. The mission is successful, and they return to the station unknowingly bringing back a gooey green substance that mutates into one-eyed tentacled monsters that feed off electricity. Soon the station is crawling with them, and people are being zapped left and right!

This movie is worth seeing for the opening theme song alone. Everything about this movie is trite but it's great fun.

This is a terrible film, with special effects that look like they're in a movie from ten years prior. But you can't really hate on something that features the threat of green back-slime, and puts stuntmen in one-eyed, electric tentacle costumes. Almost surreal.

ne of the most attacked films of all time, Kinji Fukasaku's The Green Slime is an obvious attempt to cash-in on the burgeoning interest in 2001 (also released that year). But whereas Kubrick's space opera is positively majestic, the same cannot be said here. The Thing From Another World-aping plot delivers some apalling cornball dialogue, and the rest of the show doesn't fare much better: there's dreadfully wooden acting (witness the 'going up to 3 Gs' moment), the most obvious modelwork ever and it certainly doesn't date well, as best proved by the so-60s-it-hurts dance sequence, replete with then-fashion to boot. But as with Plan 9, it at least isn't pretentious. This is one of those daft, crap-but-amusing sci-fi Bs that made the fifties and sixties so entertaining. It may also claim as position as a cinematic milestone, as it was apparently the first joint Japanese-American film production. And one might also argue its influence on Alien, but whether Ridley was taking down notes from this mess for his first masterpiece is debatable.

The Green Slime turned out be just a slight touch better than I was expecting it to be. The film, while being dreadful in the dialogue and story department, is actually quite colorful and features lots of cool shots and camera movements, not to mention old-fashioned special effects that are both quaint and charming. Nothing is amazing, by any means, but I expected a boring-looking movie, and it wasn't that. It's trite because of the material (and the fact that they have to throw a love triangle in there for drama), but it looks much better than many of its contemporaries. And it has a groovy theme song too.

Propably the best Green Slime in Space movie ever made. a bit like Day of the Triffids, but in space then. The space was a cool place in 1968. You could swim around in a space suite much in any way you want. You can decend onto an asteroid which is about to collide withe earth, even drive around in cars on it. All women look like there with the B-52's and there's always time for some love hullabaloo in the meamntime as fighting aliens in the corridors of an space station the size of a minor city up in space. There's even a dance scene at the space station. 1968 did look good. It's pretty ridicolous, but made in agood pace in a good mode.
