The Grandmaster (2013)

Ip Man's peaceful life in Foshan changes after Gong Yutian seeks an heir for his family in Southern China. Ip Man then meets Gong Er who challenges him for the sake of regaining her family's honor. After the Second Sino-Japanese War, Ip Man moves to Hong Kong and struggles to provide for his family. In the mean time, Gong Er chooses the path of vengeance after her father was killed by Ma San.

It's a bit slow and.dull at points. But it's stunning cinematography and colorful and fast fight choreography make it one of the more refined marshal arts films I've seen. Great for newbies and a sweet tasty treat for people like me who watch these kinds of films all the time.

Even at its best, "The Grandmaster" suffers from bloat. Spending years on a film doesn't bring out the director's best qualities.

Wong Kar Wai, spent years shooting this film. The result is amazing. The fighting scenes are breath-taking, it's dialogues are philosophic. Most impressive part is its artistic angle of shooting. Almost every 24 film of a second can stand alone as a piece of art it self. Wong Kar Wai cleverly explore Yip Man's life, making it a legend by destiny, a technique that gives him the world but defeated by life; at the same time, a heart-breaking love story.

I don't think I just watched a movie about martial arts, I also don't think I watched a romance story. It's so beautifully done, the colour, the choreography and the cinematographic, AMAZING.
