The Girl Next Door (1999)

In 1995, at the urging of her then-husband, an Oklahoma housewife submitted a topless photo of herself to a men's magazine, thus launching her phenomenal career as porn star Stacy Valentine. In this eye-opening and refreshingly even-handed film, Valentine candidly discusses the inner-workings and occupational hazards of the adult entertainment world, touching on the glamour -- and frequent emptiness -- of life in "the business.

The Girl Next Door shows porn star Stacy Valentine's fierce determination to do whatever it takes to succeed in her chosen profession. Director Fugate's accomplishment is to turn this Barbie doll caricature into a fully realized human being.

Stacy Valentine, a successful porn star, started as an Oklahoma housewife. This documentary's behind-the-scenes reveals about Stacy Valentine are fascinating, but when Valentine wonders about why she's so depressed and where all her personal, emotional, and professional strife comes from, it becomes evident that she isn't a remarkably deep or intelligent human being. She's interesting because she's hot and willing to fuck in any and every which way people can imagine. She's interesting because she's in an interesting industry (say what you want about porn, but it's at least interesting that people pay money to watch other people do something that is generally considered private). But her context is where her fascinating qualities begin and end. Overall, there are interesting parts about this documentary, but its central subject can wear on anyone's patience.

Interesting documentary about a porn star. Kind of like a well-made episode of HBO's REAL SEX, basically.

Interesting bio of a woman goaded into sending pics to Gallery, who then ends up divorcing her douche-bag husband when her career takes off as first a nude model, then an adult film star. Interesting watch, though it never really goes anywhere surprising. Worth a rental.

The most shocking part of the documentary is how Stacy really does seem like the innocent girl next door.
