Widowers Amos and Ben plot to romantically unite Amos' daughter Luisa and Ben's son Matt by pretending to feud and forbidding the teens to associate, knowing they will resist their fathers' interference. As the youngsters fall in love, the fathers plot to end the 'feud' by hiring a travelling showman to fake an abduction and allow Matt to 'rescue' Luisa.

I haven't seen this stage version of this, but I will be in May, so I may eventually have to change my star rating of this movie. I did find the music to be not nearly as good as that of the stage version, but I enjoyed the movie nonetheless.

As the movie got going, I started to worry it was just going to be an overly sappy, corny musical. As it got futher in I realized there's a reason for this bing the world's longest running musical, aside from the fact that it's cheap to put on. Sad, wise, romantic, and a little silly. If you liked Moulin Rouge or Strictly Ballroom, I'd suggest giving this a try.

The deliberate simplicity that works so well at the Sullivan Street Theater seems flat, anachronistic and almost spooky on the big screen.
