Its like a dry Wes Anderson comedy only slightly more palatable, but not so much funny as it is "clever." Witty comedy made for clever, intellectuals. VERDICT: Avoid this movie...see PUNCH DRUNK LOVE instead.

I enjoy Kevin Kline, and I am finding Paul Dano to be a young actor to keep an eye on. A slow-moving story, I still enjoyed watching Lewis' life go up and down. John C. Reilly adds a bit of whimsy to the story. Excellent cast ... minus Katie Holmes who apparently needed something to do for a few weeks in NYC, bringing nothing to the role she played.

I've been a Kevin Kline fan since I saw 'The Big Chill' in 1983, and a fan of Paul Dano since 'L.I.E.'. I don't know that I ever expected to see them in the same film, but I'm very happy that I have. The chemistry is perfect. Kevin Kline is a pathologically deluded gigolo savant with a penchant for wealthy old heiresses and free wine at gallery showings. Paul Dano is a former teacher cum nascent transvestite obsessed with his vegan co-worker. Both live in a 1 bedroom walkup in Manhattan. What could go wrong with that? Exactly.

It's all about eccentricity. But eccentricity played mostly for charm and amusement by actors who accomplish this sort of thing well. It's a fun trifle.

You'll either find The Extra Man utterly charming or thoroughly mystifying, but either way Kevin Kline, playing a community-theater version of himself, with all the foppishness and Shakespearean pretension but half the talent and none of the luck, inhabits its peculiar soul.
