Sorry but this movie is NOT scary, or interesting, unless annoying is scary? This is a couple hours of my life I will never get back. I was so bored that by the time the nurse stabs herself in the eyes I was kind of like “MEH, I should have done the same an hour ago.

The players sell it. And the jolts — an apparition here, a ghost in a shadows there — get the job done.

The Dark and the Wicked offers supremely atmospheric thrills that will hauntingly resonate with anyone who's ever been faced with a similar situation.

While I found myself disturbed and scared at quite a few moments, that’s all the film really has to offer. I don’t feel invested into any of the characters, or their relationships. It feels very repetitive and lacking much (if any) narrative moment other than the next scare. There is definitely some great tone and it’s visually sound, but needed some refining in the screenplay department to build on the concept, add in some origins, refine the emotional drama and the depth of the family relationships.

Although its bleak worldview may be a turnoff for viewers who like their media a bit more life-affirming, if you’ve ever said to a friend, “it’s so fucked up, you’ve got to see it,” The Dark And The Wicked is one horror movie that lives up to its title.
