Simply the greatest and most perfect silent picture ever. This is a mind-shatteringly excellent film about the horrors of conformity and the painful bleakness of anonymity. The supremely talented James Murray is electric in his portrayal of an utterly ordinary man squashed by "modern" life. It ends with a vague message of hope, which comes off as deliberately hollow. After all, how special is love if heartbreak is always waiting at the end?

A film that could be re-made scene-by-scene today and still remain relevant.

One of the earliest films in the "indie" style coming to us almost at the birth of talkies. Vidor brings a tremendous amount of depth in the storyline and the actors involved are thankfully up to the challenge.

King Vidor's masterwork. A mesmerising study of the average man trying to hold onto his soul.
