Simply the greatest and most perfect silent picture ever. This is a mind-shatteringly excellent film about the horrors of conformity and the painful bleakness of anonymity. The supremely talented James Murray is electric in his portrayal of an utterly ordinary man squashed by "modern" life. It ends with a vague message of hope, which comes off as deliberately hollow. After all, how special is love if heartbreak is always waiting at the end?

Pretty good for the time that it came out. Still it's a silent movie so hard to watch at times.

It starts off almost like a piece of all-Americana, but it turns very quickly into something else: a classic tale of the all-American Blues, done to some tragic chords and a couple of funny bits. It's one of the final masterpieces of the silent era, but it's message resonates to many other films, including the recent Revolutionary Road.

It is pushed by the power that it is fun to make movies and it can not be helped. Camera work that licks over Manhattan and looks up at the building, the beauty of shaping that big people gather and wander through, the wonderful love scene in Niagara, the trembling of the hero's hand, the production of the last s scene. I was overwhelmed by the power of the movie, independent of the good or bad of the theme of this movie.

The Crowd is a masterpiece - moving, funny, heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful. It's a must for anyone interested in the roots of moviemaking, and it's a good choice to show to someone who thinks they wouldn't like silent films.
