The Convert (2008)

Two Malaysian sisters, Rohani and Rohana, run away from home to escape their wealthy father's mistreatment. They find refuge in a small town where they get to know Brian Goh, a young Catholic schoolteacher. Brian is irresistibly attracted to the two girls. Impressed by their extraordinary courage in the face of adversity, their relationship forces him to confront the ghosts of his own childhood. Director Yasmin Ahmad explores the possibilities of emotional survival after being traumatised by loved ones. Through the wanderings of three lost souls who band together and console one another, Muallaf celebrates friendship, forgiveness, and the coming to terms with the past.

Yasmin's final movie release in Malaysia. Yes, this is another movie that broke the Malaysian movie taboo, this time going deep into religion. I don;t want to reveal much here but trust me, it's worth to watch (What Yasmin movie isnt?). However, somehow I felt that this movie is abit of a rushed production, it lacked the killer element of making people wanting to see it over and over again. But still the storyline is deep and FRESH. I would watch this movie more than once.

lots of plot elements undeveloped, leaving the ending unsatisfying... but i think the key message got across in the end, and perhaps that was what yasmin intended to do

It is still signature Yasmin Ahmad right down to the ambiguous art film ending. Her visuals and style always carry a down-to-earth warmth and natural feel, but her characterization still remains uneven.
