Stefan Haupt beautifully re-creates the enduring love story between two members, French-literature teacher Ernst Ostertag and hairdresser/drag queen Röbi Rapp, that survived the stresses of secrecy and homophobia of the 1950s.

"The Circle" was Switzerland's entry for the Academy Awards' Best Foreign Language category, and it measures up as a fine film. The film is a dramatized documentary about the first legally recognized same-sex couple in Switzerland. Although the acting and production values are akin to BBC productions, one gets lost in the world of shame, fear and suspicion that surrounded the gay community in 1950's postwar Europe. It's really a compelling time capsule that's worthwhile to experience.

Saw this knowing absolutely nothing about it, and glad I did. An account of the struggles of a specific gay community in Eastern Europe, post-World War II that makes you question whether Hitler really lost at all.

This story of a gay organization in 1950's Zurich was quite the unexpected treat. Documentary interwoven with the story made this and intricate moving true life tale. Highly recommended.
