The Cement Garden (1993)

After the death of her husband, the mother of Julie, Jack, Sue and Tom begins to suffer from a mysterious illness. Aware that she is going to have to go into hospital she opens a bank account for the children, so that they can be financially self-sufficient and will be able to avoid being taken into care by the authorities. Unfortunately she also dies and Julie and Jack (the older, teenage children) decide to hide her body in the basement so that they can have free reign of their household. Soon Tom has taken to dressing as a girl whilst Sue has become increasingly reticent, confiding only to her diary, meanwhile Jack and Julie sense an attraction developing for each other. However Julie's new beau, Derek, threatens to unearth the many dark secrets within this family as he becomes increasingly suspicious of Jack.

Another failed attempt to transfer the novels of Iain M. Banks onto the big screen made worse by the unwatchable Gainsbourg and a spotty and hapless Robertson as the incestuous couple failing to play house. Like walking through molasses in slo-mo, TCG takes an interminable time to build up any tension (enough with the shots of washing-up already!) and exists solely as B-grade art porno for those chattering classes brought up on the films of Charlotte Rampling. It also fails to push any of the buttons normally reserved for films dealing with such disturbing topics: if you want us to recoil in horror, it's best not to give us so many shots of the schoolgirls knickers. Conversely, if director Birkin wants us to sympathise with the characters, he shouldn't have made them into such spoilt and feckless twerps. Frustrating and pretentious.

It was an ok movie, not for everyone. Family secrets, sexual content.

Haunting, uncomfortable, dreamlike. Unforgetable.

Love this one. I've seen it first on TV, maybe 10 years ago. Charlotte Gainsbourg - awesome. A quiet movie, but the more disturbing. Need to read the novel by Ian McEwan.

Julie: Girls can wear jeans and cut their hair short, wear shirts and boots, because it's OK to be a boy, but for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, because you think that being a girl is degrading. But secretly you'd love to know what it's like, wouldn't you? What it feels like for a girl?
