Family drama spliced to ghost/horror genre... generally unsuccessful.

Is "The Canal" the most original movie? The answer is no. In fact, it very clearly borrows from other ghost stories of the golden age. However, how it manages to still be creepy is another story. Director Ivan Kavanagh knows how to build tension and blur the line between supernatural and psychological terror, which makes the movie all the more scary. Even if it does borrow a lot, "The Canal" assembles a series of some truly frightening images, and it is helped by its element of implication (there isn't much gore here), Rupert Evans's great performance, its cinematography, and a score that is sure to produce major anxiety. "The Canal" is proof that though mainstream horror is taking a turn for the better, foreign productions still know how to freak you out.

The Canal is a super twisted horror film, but is honestly just not that scary. It has a good premise and it executes it well. It manages to be both deeply unsettling and partially scary at times, but really never follows through and elevates itself from being just a pretty good film and decent horror. It is incredibly well made and has all of the elements to be truly horrifying, but for some reason, it just did not terrify me as it should, though it certainly is creepy. In saying this, the ending and pay-off is fantastic and deeply twisted to the point that it leaves you in shock. However, the proceeding hour and a half do not create the necessary tension consistently enough for the film as a whole to be more than alright as a whole. In saying this, it is certainly worth a watch and is very much entertaining, but it certainly pulls no punches and the ending is mostly predictable.

This psychological thriller was absolutely wonderful. I was on the edge of my seat and I loved the 1902 element and how it came completely full circle. It was highly tensing and horrifying. A movie that I recommend to anyone who loves psychological thrillers.

The Canal is a magnificently scary movie, I haven't seen something like this in a while. It's basicaly an Irish copycat of Sinister (2012) and it definitely deserves a little more, than the small attention it gets, it's very effective and creepy, it's atmospheric, it has an intriguing story, a great performance by Rupert Evans and marvelous sound design, which is definitely the best thing about this movie. Overall, it's a good chilling horror pic, definitely on any horror fan's watch list. Recommended !!
