Not great comedy, but fun entertainment with two great stars.

I'm convinced that some of the brilliance of this little gem must come via inspiration for the writers gleaned from It Happened One Night. I do not know Bette Davis's oeuvre well enough to be sure, but I'll bet one dollar she never regretted doing this screwball comedy. She performs her romantic co-lead beautifully, and she surely looks like she's having a great deal of fun doing it. James Cagney too, I think, is very often only remembered for his dramatic roles, more specifically, his heavy dramatic roles. But when you see him romping through this fluffy little fairy-tale romance, you can't help but notice both that he is a very good comedic actor and that he seems to be enjoying himself as well. For Davis fans and for Cagney fans this is a must-see, and for huge Jack Carson fans like me, this should not be missed. As all of his fans know only too well (and usually hate) poor Jack Carson gets the raw end of the deal again : ) He really does make any film he's in better. Truly a remarkable actor.

Of the movies I have seen featuring Bette (and I have seen just about everything that is out on DVD as well as a few others), this is easily my least favorite. There have been other films where she played "bad" characters (either bad at heart or just weak women) but here, she does nothing but play the stereotypical shrew that gets dragged around by Cagney. It's highly disappointing. I believe this came out last year as a part of the Cagney set and maybe Cagney fans will enjoy this more. Davis fans will probably want it to be one the last releases to come out on DVD when so many of her better or more interesting movies from the Warners years are not out yet. A turkey of a romantic comedy that has forced laughs along with a lack of chemistry by the couple.

This is actually a very good description of the movie. Bette Davis is my favorite actress and James Cagney is my favorite actor, so I was primed to love this film. Unfortunately, I generally do not enjoy screwball comedies. And this was probably one of the worst screwball comedies I have ever seen. But that is neither Davis' nor Cagney's fault. As always they did a stellar job, unlike the script writers.

Cagney and Davis don't have a great amount of chemistry--it's pretty much Cagney trying to one-up Davis (and succeeding) while she repeatedly falls into cactus bushes.
