Solid but unsurprising noir that rides on the quality of its performances.

Not bad period piece of an ex-air force pilot accused of murdering his wife. The third pairing between Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake isn't the best--leave that for The Glass Key or This Gun For Hire. However, kudos to William Bendix, who also appeared opposite the leads in The Glass Key, plays Ladd's faithful wartime friend who's not too bright and who gets headaches from loud noises due to a war injury. Trivia note: the title of this movie inspired the media in 1947 to call the horrifically butchered Elizabeth Short the Black Dahlia.

Ladd and Lake make for an exellent chemistry in this Classic film noir with a Raymond Chandler screenplay. Not quite hitting the heady heights of the Bogart noirs, but certainly one of the worthy runners-up with an ending that kept me guessing.

a very dark movie - thematically speaking. not the best noir out there but good one all the same. funny to see hugh beaumont (of "leave it to beaver" fame) here as friend and lawyer just back from the war. this film touches on a lot of issues: veterans with mental disorders, domestic abuse, alcoholism, and a host of other darker elements of human nature.
