The Black Room (1935)

In a 16th-century European town, the ruling family has been given a prophecy that, should there ever be twin boys born, the younger will murder the older; so is dismayed when twins are born to the popular baron. The older grows to be a selfish, slovenly man, who inherits the castle at his father's death and becomes ruler over the formerly happy villagers. He enjoys his power until he learns his younger brother is returning from abroad and, afraid of the prophecy, he determines to murder his sibling, hide his body in the "black room" - an old torture chamber sealed away behind the fireplace - and then impersonate him, right down to his withered arm. In this way he hopes to not only avoid the prophecy, but also escape consequences of his other criminal deeds and obtain marriage to a local girl of the nobility...

Mostly a typical melodrama of the era, but a cool dual role by Karloff and a neat-o oubliette make it more memorable than it should be.

Karloff plays a good twin and a evil twin. Classic Karloff, looks great and is alot of fun to watch.

This was a really well done thriller. Karloff was fantastic in the duel roll of rival brothers. One of those odd films that was interesting and fun, yet didn't have anything really making it stand out, other then Karloff.

Karloff plays twin brothers, one good and one evil, which sounds cool, and he gives good performances, but the movie tells you the end more than once, so it's just a matter of seeing how the prophesy of the good twin killing the evil twin will happen. It was predictable because of that, but it wasn't bad.

Surely a sparkling gem for Karloff fans. Playing double roles for the twin brothers demonstrates what a great range of performer he was. Karloff plays both the devilish and kind brothers, but in addition, he portrays the nasty brother imitating the gentle one. And that's what makes this masterpiece fun along with great sets, costumes, and lighting. It was like a Gothic fairy tale with good amount of horror elements. Director Roy William Neil did an excellent job; especially having the two twins in the same room together really boost this underrated film. Kudos to Columbia Pictures, they showed that there was more to Karloff than just the Frankenstein's monster.
