I think I was ready for a boffo adventure story and this Howard Hawks picture, featuring a group of men traveling up the Missouri River to the Pacific Northwest to do some trading with the Blackfoot Indians, hit the spot. Kirk Douglas and Dewey Martin star as a couple of rough and ready young guys who join up with Uncle Zeb (Arthur Hunnicutt) and a band of French outdoorsmen for the long journey. Hawks is great at creating a sense of community and his combination of sets and location shooting make the drama feel almost real. There are a number of different exciting episodes along the way and of course a love interest in the form of a Blackfoot maid, brought along on the trip. The relationship between Douglas and Martin - and with the woman Teal Eye - doesn't always hold together properly. Viewers likely prefer the adventure story and perhaps Hawks did too.

An interesting frontier drama but not one of Douglas' best, however there are not so many of these very early day westerns around so this does have value.

The Boys' Own action-adventure stuff - all done for real: the boat tipping over, a hunting party catapulting fresh meat from the hillside - is still stirring, though Hawks' real interest lies in the company the men keep, and the sparky banter they keep up, around the campfire. You could warm your hands on the democratic sentiments being expressed here: the arguments in favour of fair trade (and parity for the natives) receive an airing, the heroism and courage of these trailblazers is resolutely played down, catchphrases ("Sic 'em, Boone", "Well, I'll be dogged") rise up out of the flames, and even the amputation of Kirk's finger gets spun out into an amusingly boozy set-piece. Less significant, perhaps, than "Red River" or "Rio Bravo" - the supporting cast is solid, rather than outstanding - it remains most convivial entertainment, with a welcome shot of mythic poetry in the final moments.

Pretty slow and not very emotionally involving. Interesting way of putting the period in perspective though.
